Tony A Trujillo, Jr.
President and Chief Executive Officer

The Institute's President and CEO, Tony A. Trujillo, Jr., joined the Institute in July 2007. A former Executive
Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Intelsat Global Service Corporation, he has a wealth of
experience in corporate communications, marketing, human resources, facilities management, and office services. Tony has served on numberous boards and is knowledgeable about nonprofit organization.


Virginia Aleman
Executive Assistant

Virginia works closely with the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees along with coordinating events for the various Pankey Committees. She is also the point person for the accuracy and accounting for gifts to our Class One Triple Plus Club and our Capital Campaign and urges students to contact her with any questions or concerns they may have about their gifts. Cris Casanueva
Operations Manager

For the Institute, she manages Lodging, spearheadeds many projects (including construction, facility usage, Alumni and Triple Plus Club meetings, outreach seminars and other special events).

Mark Collis
Resource Center Manager
On Feb. 9, 1982, Mark Collis came to the Institute. Today he's Manager of the Resource Center, and assists participants in obtaining equipment and materials they are exposed to in classes.

Mark says what he loves best is providing service to a group of folks who appreciate what we do for them; he feeds off of their enthusiasm.

Victoria A. Champion
Development Director

Jack Klavans
Dental Technician


After spending 20 years in the food service industry as owner of three coffee sub shops, Jack Klavans changed careers and became a Dental Technician. Since 1991 Jack has been with the Institute, beginning part-time pouring models, and then becoming Laboratory Supervisor.

Jack was born in Norfolk, VA and raised in that area. After high school, he apprenticed as an optical lens technician, then moved to Miami in 1970.

Jack can usually be found in the lab here at the Institute, mounting and pouring models, and preparing for the next class. He can also be reached at (305) 428-5515 or jklavans@pankey.org.

Diego Oquendo
Technical Operations Coordinator

After having been with the Institute for 25 years, Diego Oquendo's face is very familiar to many of our students. The son of South American immigrants, Diego was the fourth child out of seven. After living in New York, South Florida and Colombia, Diego settled in Miami in 1978.

After attending Florida Career College, he received his Certificate as a Dental Technician. He began working at the Institute in 1983. In 1995, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of joining the U.S. Military, Air Force Reserves. After a 7-month leave of absence, Diego returned to the Institute and began assisting with audio/visual needs.

Today, Diego is the Institute's Technical Operations Coordinator. His responsibilities include maintaining the a/v equipment, filming, editing and assisting the faculty with a/v needs, ordering dental supplies, and ensuring participants and visiting faculty have a pleasant experience during their stay.

Diego says what has made his 21 years at the Institute so enjoyable has been the friendly atmosphere among the staff, faculty and participants, and being challenged with new projects.

Carla Pina
Registration Associate

Since November 2003, Carla Pina has been a Registration Associate at the Institute, answering and distributing incoming calls, corresponding with students, providing course information and helping students register.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Carla moved with her family to the United States in 1989. She obtained a Marketing degree from Florida International University in Miami and has worked in the Public Relations and Language Services fields.

Carla is bilingual and says what she enjoys most about being a part of the Institute is the chance to work with professionals from all over the world.

Mirene Rios
Lodging Manager

Anyone who's stayed at the Pankey Lodge knows what a beautiful and well-managed place it is. Much of that is thanks to Mirene Rios, Lodging Manager for the Institute.

With the Institute since 1987, Mirene takes care of everything related to student accommodations, including reservations, housekeeping, and making sure that they can enjoy their stay here in five-star accommodations.

Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Mirene was a homemaker until she began working at the Institute. She speaks three languages and has an education in arts, literature and history. She says she loves having the opportunity at the Institute to meet different people, and learn and grow.

Pauline Shaw
Manager, Publications Department

Pauline Shaw is our energetic publications manager, administrator for the Center for Professional Journalism at The Pankey Institute, and membership administrator for the L.D. Pankey Alumni Association. She has been with the Institute since 1998, having come to us from the staff of the Islander News on Key Biscayne. Pauline and her husband are natives of Florida but spent a number of years in Florida, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas where she was the Director of Administrative Services for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They enjoy taking their boat out into the ocean, fishing, and traveling to see their two grandchildren. On land, they are active in the Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church and volunteer a lot of time in service to others.

Harvey Trautenberg
Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

Harvey Trautenberg has been a resident of Dade County since the 1950s. He graduated from the University of Florida with degrees in Economics and Accounting. He was staff photographer for Time - Life, Inc. while attending college in the 1970s.

Harvey was owner of a successful real estate company and has a lengthy history in real estate management, development and health care. He was Chief Financial Officer of a large multi national corporation prior to joining The Pankey Institute in September 1998.

Harvey currently resides in Aventura with his wife Marci and two sons. His hobbies include photography and riding his motorcycle.

Deborah E. Bush
Consultant

Deb was the Marketing & Communications Director of The Pankey Institute from early 1997 to late 2003. She has continued to work on a consulting basis for The Pankey Institute and dentists who desire publishing assistance. When in residence at the Institute, 9-12 days a month, Deb can be found on the 3rd floor helping with marketing and publications projects. Deb is a member of the Class One Triple Plus Club and has assisted Pankey dentists on mission dental teams in Romania and Guatemala.

Prior to coming to the Institute, Deb was a contract writer from 1975-1990 serving the University of Michigan, ADP Network Services, Citicorp and Ford Motor Co. Deb developed a 9-writer publications team for Creative Solutions, Inc., a division of Thompson Publishing, and managed that team from 1990-1997.

Deb serves on the Board of the Institute for Self Active Education in Melbourne Beach, FL, the Atlantic-side small town she calls home. Deb has two adult children, a 13-year-old son, and two poodles. Deb's husband is a CPA, Committee Chairman of the Manatee District of the Boy Scouts of America, an ethics instructor of the Florida Institute of CPAs and its Brevard County Secretary.
