In addition to the Directors and Advisors, the Institute is guided by a philosophy.
A Philosophy of Dentistry
When Dr. L.D. Pankey looked at dentistry in the 1920s and 30s, he saw a profession that needed to change.
Teeth were being pulled instead of reconstructed and patients were usually uneducated about oral health. Dentists were often dissatisfied with their roles as feared, forceps-wielding tooth-pullers.
Dentistry is about helping others, he thought. And he set about to change his practice of dentistry, creating his Philosophy for Dental Practice.
Creating the Philosophy
Aristotle's cross of life defines happiness as a balance between Love, Play, Work and Worship. Dr. Pankey, after evaluating this timeless paradigm, created the Pankey Cross of Dentistry.
Here the balance comes from Knowing Yourself, Knowing Your Patient, Knowing Your Work and Applying Your Knowledge. When followed, the Cross of Dentistry leads to balance and great rewards.
Of course, the ways in which each person attends to balancing his or her life's work through work, play, worship and love are always different.
The wonderful thing about Dr. Pankey's Philosophy is that it is flexible, stretching to meet personal needs. It is also perhaps the most important behavioral construct available to the profession of dentistry.
Living the Philosophy
At the Institute, everything we do and teach is permeated by this Philosophy. It is our responsibility and privilege to pass on Dr. Pankey's teachings, and we do it with passion.
Come to the Institute to learn more about Dr. Pankey's Philosophy (Continuum courses generally include a section on this).
Read more about Dr. Pankey's Philosophy in his book, A Philosophy of the Practice of Dentistry, co-authored by Dr. William J. Davis.
