Sequencing Complex Restorative Cases

Led by Dr. Tom McDonald and Dr. Steven Smith

  • Is the idea of complex restoration overwhelming for you and your patients?
  • Do you feel that you lack the skills and confidence to treat complex cases?
  • Do your patients feel that they lack the financial ability to accept complex restoration?
  • Would you like to incorporate complex restorative treatment into your practice?

The overall goal of this course is to help clinicians understand how to apply their knowledge and skills to the treatment of complex cases in their practice.

Many modern clinicians have accumulated vast knowledge of TMJ, occlusion, aesthetics, and restorative dentistry. Unfortunately, knowledge does not always translate into confidence in restoring complex cases. Segmental restoration over time can present an especially daunting series of challenges. In the early days of restorative dentistry, Drs. Pankey, Mann, and Schuyler collaborated to form a comprehensive system for staging complex restorative cases that has withstood the test of time for many decades. This basic philosophy and these techniques are just as valuable today as they were in the 1930’s. Today’s dentists have the advantage of an incredible array of technological devices, high-tech instruments, aesthetic awareness, and amazing materials that their predecessors did not have.

Drs. Smith and McDonald come from two different backgrounds educationally but share a common approach to complex restorative cases, which is absolutely based on these time-tested principles.  The collaboration of these two "wet-gloved" clinicians provides a dramatic array of chairside, real world techniques. This course will outline a modern approach to staging that can be applied to today’s restorative practice with special emphasis on aesthetics, occlusion, and segmental restoration.  Few patients are able to restore their entire mouth at once. Staging can allow clinicians to segmentally restore patients over time with precision and predictability.

Learning objectives:

  • The important components of a comprehensive exam
  • How to achieve a stable, repeatable starting point for the occlusion
  • How to refine the anterior teeth to achieve optimum aesthetics and function
  • How to develop an ideal posterior occlusion
  • How to sequence a case in the proper order
  • The importance of segmental restoration for clinical predictability and patient acceptance.
